    Tips:

    • When planting around your HVAC unit, you need at least 18" of air space on all sides. Always consider the adult size of the plants, and don't forget to leave an access route for repairmen.

    • Electronic thermostats save energy by keeping track of your schedule and lowering use when you're gone or asleep.

    • Did you know? A home that uses natural gas for heating, water heating, clothes drying and cooking contributes 60 percent less carbon dioxide to the atmosphere than an all-electric home whose power is generated at a coal-fired power plant.

    • Tape one end of a tissue to the bottom of a wire coat hanger. Hold the "draftometer" by the hook and it will help you locate drafts anywhere in your home.

    • A 1/8-inch opening around two exterior doorframes can let in as much cold air as a basketball-sized hole in the wall!

    • Did you know? Weatherproofing your home not only saves you money, it reduces pollution. Cutting your energy use by 15% can save as much as 500 lbs. of coal-fired energy production.
