A free-standing shed -- like this one -- can become an efficient workspace with the addition of solar powered lighting and outlets.

Solar consultant and engineer Jeff Gilbert suggested a solar system kit for Blythe's project. The kit contains a solar panel, DC battery, charge controller and inverter.

Solar power is one of the most effective ways to power a free-standing storage shed, workshop or garage. It's a great way to start making a difference in your energy consumption and is a fairly easy do-it-yourself project.

Homeowner Bill Blythe decided to tackle this project on his own. Wanting to light his outdoor shed, Blythe knew that running electricity from his home would be impractical. Lacking electrical experience and reluctant to hire an electrician, Blythe felt that solar power provided a simple solution.

Because Blythe was also inexperienced in solar installation, he called Jeff Gilbert, a solar consultant and engineer, for help with the project.
