Brad Staggs pays a visit to a homeowner who needs to replace the screen in her storm door.
Materials:
Replacement screen Spline Spline roller with built-in razor knife Scratch awl or slot screwdriver Needle-nose pliers
- Open the door and lock the closer in the open position (figure A), then remove the pins holding both ends of the closer in place.
- Remove the screws in the door hinges.
- Lay the door down and remove the old spline, prying it loose with the awl or the screwdriver and using either the needle-nose pliers or your fingers to pull it out. Take out the old screen.
- Lay out the new screen and cut it slightly larger than the opening.
- Lay the spline on top of the new screen over the channel into which they will fit. Then use the slot screwdriver to tuck the spline (and the screen underneath it) into the center of one side. Cut the piece of spline a bit longer than you will need it to be.
- Repeat on the opposite side. Then use the spline roller to anchor the spline (figure B) in the channel around the perimeter of the opening.
- Trim excess spline and screen with the utility knife.
- Remount the door by reinserting the screws into the hinges. Then replace the closer and fit the pins back into it to hold it in place.
