Often a door will bind simply because its hinges are loose. Over time the weight and daily use of the door combine to pull the screws out of the jamb. In some cases a longer screw will save the day. Or you can give the old screws something to grip - for instance, a few round toothpicks. Push a few toothpicks into the hole, and snap them off flush. No glue is needed. Reinstalling the screws will wedge the toothpicks tight. This technique is also useful when you need to shift a screw hole slightly, such as when repositioning a strike plate.
