    Tips:

    • Mimic the grain pattern on a raised-panel door by painting its parts in order. First, paint the raised panels and center rail with vertical strokes. Next, brush the cross-braces, or stiles, horizontally. Finally, use vertical strokes to paint the outer rails for beautiful results.

    • You can lubricate door locks by rubbing the point of a No. 2, graphite pencil on both sides of your house key and working the key into its lock.

    • Measuring inside door frames can be tricky. For precise results, run a tape measure across the area, and butt a short accurate ruler against the opposite side. Read the tape where the short ruler ends, and add the length of the ruler for an accurate total.

    • Wear rubber gloves when working with unfinished glass. The gloves will protect your hands from cuts, prevent fingerprints and provide a solid grip.

    • When replacing window screens, use a light coat of multi-purpose oil on the spline grooves to help ease the spline into place.

    • Many minor glass scratches can be polished out using a soft cloth and extra-whitening toothpaste.
