Brad Staggs, the host of DIY's Complete Fix-It, shows a homeowner how to replace a board in the frame of her garage door. The board had been cut slightly too long upon installation and was soaking up water every time it rained (figure A). - First, in order to remove the board, determine how it was put on. In this project, Staggs removed a lag bolt from the door bracket and determined that the bolts pierced only a little way into the board (figure B). He then used a power drill with an attachment to back all four bolts out about 1/4".
- Using a cat's paw and a hammer, and wearing eye protection, remove all nails holding the board in place (figure C). Then, with a flat bar and a hammer, remove the board (figure D).
- Cut a new board 1/2" shorter than the rotted one, and prime all four sides and the ends.
- Test fit the new board, then predrill four pairs of holes approximately 18" apart.
- Apply construction adhesive to one side of the board, set the board in place and nail through the predrilled holes.
- Apply exterior-grade caulk along the edges of the board. Let dry for two hours, then paint the board.
- Retighten the bracket lag bolts and use a power washer to remove any algae stains.
