    Topics covered on today's episode:

Repairing gaps and overflows in a slate-tile floor

Making "bubbling up" carpet lie flat again

    Installing a Pergo floor

    Stripping tarpaper from subfloor

Repairing "soft spots" in laminate flooring

Adding tracks to the bottom of sliding closet doors

Expanding a doorway in a supporting wall

    Framing for a screen door

Doorknob is too close to door frame, but can't be moved

Replacing rubber strip at the base of a shower door

Anchoring an antique doorknob in a wall, so that a mirror can hang from it

The best way to cut Plexiglas

    Tips:

    • If you have heating ducts in your floor, you can pull up the vent cover and look inside to get the lowdown on what is underneath your existing floor.

    • A wide putty knife or metal dustpan can help you find any renegade carpet-padding staples. Just slide it across the floor and listen for the click.

    • When painting a door, screw a lag bolt into the center of the top edge and two more spread apart in the bottom edge. Let the lag bolts rest on sawhorses and when you finish one side, you can flip the door over and continue to work on the other.

    • A golf tee can help you fix a stripped screw hole. Coat the tee with wood glue, then tap it into place. Cut the tee flush using a sharp utility knife, then reinsert the screw.

    • Tape a ballpoint-pen tube to the side of your penetrating oil for convenient straw storage.
