Decorative Stone FeatureDean and Derek decide to add a decorative element to the wall next to the sink. It is a piece of stone with a fossilized fish. First set the decorative piece on the wall, then set the thin veneer stone around it (figure Q). Dean and Derek hold the fossil in place where they want it to go and make several marks on the scratch coat around it. They butter the back of the fossil and set it in place using the marks as guides. They also add screws below it for additional support.
With the fossil set solidly in place, move on and set the stone around it. Start with the corners, then fill in the field. If a stone needs to be cut to fit around the edge of the fossil, trace a line on the stone and cut it with the grinder. Use a chipping hammer to rough up the edge of the saw cut so it blends naturally with the other stones. Jointing Once all the stones are set on the walls, it's time to joint the stonework. Pack the joints about three-quarters full and remove any unsightly clumps of mortar. The last step in the stone work is brushing the joints. Use a cheap paintbrush to brush the mortar and give the stone a finished look.
FinishAs a final touch, Dean and Derek add a flat screen TV to the large wall . First they install the wall mount (figure R), and then set the stone around it so you can't see the scratch coat.
With the wall mount in place and the stonework finished, Dean and Derek hang the TV in place to give this small houseboat the feel of a luxury liner with a state of the art home entertainment system.
