Setting FacadeAs you build up the façade (figure K), you may find that there are gaps behind the stones. Do not fill these gaps with solid cement, as that can cause the veneer work to push out. Instead, put some cement in the gaps, then throw in some stone chip (figure L). Add more cement if needed. Adding the chips in this way stabilizes this stonework.
Jointing And Brushing- Before the mortar gets too hard, you'll want to make sure you joint it.
- Using a flat jointer, take a handful of mortar, and pack the joints so that they're filled solid. Dean and Derek like to recess the joints slightly to show off more of the stone (figure M).
- Then use a brush to smooth the mortar and give your stonework a polished, clean look (figure N).
A Visit To The Quarry Dean visits the granite quarry to see how they cut the stone. Weymouth granite has huge seams running up and down the rock. The quarry uses small charges of dynamite to pop the seams. A large block of stone is then cut from the mountain and transported to the saw. The stone is cut with a huge diamond blade wet saw. The saw cuts the large blocks into manageable pieces, which are then cut further by the splitter. After the stone has been split, it goes to a crew of masons that shape the stone by hand. The hand cut pieces are collected onto pallets and delivered to the client.
