    Installing Field Cobble

    1. Start at the highest point of the driveway installation and install cobble down the driveway towards the street (figure A). Here are several pointers:

    • As with the borders, cut out the half stones ahead of time. This aids with the installation of the cobble – particularly the heavy thick cobble. The thick cobbles can be difficult to adjust once they have been set in the sanded base. The easiest way to ensure proper joint size is to remove the half stones, line up the mat on the previously set mat and pull the mat until it slides into place.

    • Use two people to lift the 1-5/8 inch mats – they’re heavy!

    • Adjust the joints by kicking them with your feet – this saves your back from a lot of bending!

    • If you have curves, flares, or decorative elements you may need to cut the cobble. To cut the cobble, use a stone splitter, a steel hammer and chisel, or a diamond blade saw (figure B).

    2. Finish installing the cobble by wetting and compacting the 1-5/8 inch cobble into the sub-base approximately 3/8 of an inch. Compact the cobble in straight lines to ensure that it is evenly compacted across the driveway (figure C). Do not compact the thin cobble – they will break under the pressure.

    3. Finish by cleaning out the joints with a leaf blower.
