Midway through day two of this project this is how the new concrete landing appears -- the tape for the red brick border is ready to be pulled up.

Note: Click here for a materials list and complete instructions without images.

Time: 24 hours over two days.

    Difficulty Rating: It's rated a 3 on a scale of 1 to 5.

    Materials for Complete Project:

    Pressure washer
    Wheelbarrow
    Margin trowel and finishing trowels
    Nose and cove tolls
    Square nose shovel
    Knee pads
    Paintbrush, paint roller and pan
    Weed sprayer
    Cement finishing broom
    Concrete patch material
    Water-based sealer
    Stencils
    Duct tape and tape measure
    Scissors and utility knife
    Pump sprayer and primer
    Textured spray hopper
    Mixing bucket
    Drill and paddel
    Cementious dye

Note: To determine if your concrete needs repair, tap the concrete with a scraper to test. You want to hear a ping sound, not a hollow sound.

    Decorating Concrete

Note: For this particular project, Host Paul Ryan chose to go with a big stone slab pattern with stencils and a brick pattern, also with stencils. Tape was used as the stencil and each concrete step was broken up into six sections. Once the tape (stencils) is down, the step is then coated with a darker gray, and once the tape is pulled up you have the big stone slab pattern.

    1. Measure for the center line by making a chalk line and pencil marks.

    2. Lay the tape with two people to line it up perfectly (figure A), keep measuring as you tape to keep it uniform, fold over tape at end to make a tab so it's easier to pull off.

Tip: Be sure to tape the sides of the steps because once the coating begins, the job can get messy.

    3. To create look of a brick border at the landing of the steps, tape on a brick stencil (figure B).

    4. Before the final coat is applied to the concrete, you need to scrub a primer into your concrete with a hand brush. This primer coat serves two purposes: 1) It supplies a great layer for adhesion, and 2) It creates a barrier between the final coat and the existing concrete. If any of the moisture from the final coat gets absorbed into the existing concrete, it wouldn't be as durable in the long run.

    5. Mix a darker color of gray for the steps -- use a 1/2" drill with a mixing paddle.

    6. Poor a bag of cementitious dye into the water in the bucket and mix.

    7. Pour material into hopper.

    8. Set hopper gun to medium spray and spray (figure C). (Have two people available -- one to mix and the other to spray so the concrete won't dry and create a line.)

    9. To create a red brick effect, go over the stenciled area with a light coat of red. Have someone protect the unpainted areas by holding cardboard over those areas (figure D). The stencil is held down by 2x4s.

    10. Let set for a few hours before pulling off the tape. Material should be dry before pulling the tape.
