Materials:
Vinyl concrete patch Putty knife Concrete repair and caulk tube (also available in a squeeze bottle, depending on the size of cracks needing repair) Brick chisel Hammer Wire wheels and brushes Whisk broom
- Clean out the entire crack with a wire wheel on a drill (or a wire brush, if you don't have a drill). Be sure to remove all dirt and debris.
- Brush away all loose matter with a whisk broom.
- Remove larger pieces with a hammer and chisel.
- Flush the crack with the garden hose; let dry.
- Use concrete repair to fill hairline cracks (up to 1/2"); fill to overflow, as the repair medium will settle.
- Fill larger cracks with the vinyl patch and a putty knife.
To repair a crack in an asphalt driveway, the process is slightly different:
- Use a garden fork to remove grass and weeds; sweep the surface to remove debris .
- Insert a length of asphalt filler, stretching it to fill the crack and pushing it in with an old putty knife.
- Light a propane torch and melt the filler to flow in the crack.
- Fill hairline cracks with liquid acrylic latex. Pour the latex slowly, being careful not to overfill.
