It's a brand new way to set a old brick! In this Rock Solid project, professional stone masons Dean Marsico and Derek Stearns install reclaimed classic Chicago brick on the front steps and landing of a Spanish style house in Orlando, Florida.

Using a newly introduced product, EuroGrout, they turn a time consuming process into a time saver.

This flexible trouble-free process makes any stone or brick installation practically effortless.

The basic steps and materials used in this project, as seen in episode 309 of DIY's Rock Solid, are summarized below.

    Footing

    • The Chicago bricks will be set on an existing concrete foundation. But a footing needs to be made for the bottom riser so the bricks have a solid surface to sit on. Clean and sweep the steps before you begin (figure A).

      Figure C

    • Dig a footing 4 inches wide and 6 inches deep next to the bottom step.

    • Prepare the concrete for the footing using premixed concrete. Remember to wear a mask. Add water a little at a time, and mix the concrete using a hoe. Add water until the mixture is the consistency of peanut butter.

    • Spread the concrete evenly in the footing (figure B).

    • Make sure to use enough so that the brick is flush with the top of the first step (figure C).

The Florida soil is sandy, so Derek adds some junk bits of brick to the concrete footing to make the foundation stronger. Let the footing dry before you set the bricks.
