Masonry and Carpentry Tips: - Question: When was the first brick building erected in the U.S.?
a. 1073 b. 1528 c. 1633 d. 1747 Answer: The first brick building in the U.S. was erected from imported Dutch bricks in 1633 as a residence for Wouter Van Twiller, the fifth Dutch governor in New Amsterdam (future NYC). - If you just need a little mortar or concrete, combine the dry mix with water in a large zippered freezer bag and knead. Clip a corner off of the bag and you'll be ready to pour.
- A metal dustpan makes an excellent "hawk" for carrying mortar when tuck pointing brick.
- Some wood treatments are unsafe for sandboxes, vegetables, and play structures. Don't use wood with creosote (commonly used in railroad ties) or pentachlorophenol (commonly used in utility poles).
- Hockey pucks make great insulators for shop equipment. Drill them with a countersink bit and get some help when you tilt the equipment to install the pucks. They'll make your equipment run quieter and smoother and protect metal legs from moisture and rust.
- Factory-cut plywood edges are straight. To duplicate the cut, first remove a 6" section that includes the factory edge and then clamp it in place as a straightedge guide for your saw's soleplate.
