With the cost of electricity going up, simple changes can save you money.

    • Certain appliances and electronics like phone chargers and computers can use up to three-fourths their power even when they’re turned off. So the best bet is to completely unplug when not in use (figure A).

    • Lamps, TVs and other appliances throw off heat, so avoid placing them near thermostats to keep your air conditioning from running longer than necessary.

    • Replacing your tanked water heater with a tankless system that heats water only as you need it, can also save you money (figure B).

    • If you choose to keep your tanked system, draining sediment every three months and wrapping it with insulation will improve its efficiency.

    • Insulating your garage doors will reduce the loss of heating and cooling (figure C).

    • By upgrading to a more energy-efficient heating and cooling system, you’ll be able to heat and cool your home for less (figure D).

    • A tankless water heater can save up to 30 percent of the cost to heat water because it doesn’t continuously reheat the same tank of water.

    • AC adapters drain power whether the computer is plugged in or not, so unplug the adapter when it isn’t charging your laptop.

    • Make sure your heating and cooling system is the proper size for the space it covers, so it’s not working harder than it needs to.

    • To improve the efficiency of a tanked water heater, drain a quart of water every three months.
