- The "sheen" of a paint tells you how flat or shiny it is.
- Choosing the right sheen is just as important as choosing color.
- Experiment first flat paint has no shine, eggshell finish is slightly shiny, semi-gloss is shinier than eggshell, and the shiniest finish is high gloss (figure A).
- Most homes need a combination of several finishes.
- A flat finish is usually used on ceilings and for hiding imperfections in walls. It also works well in low-traffic areas.
- Trim can be covered in semi-gloss. Quick tip: Paint the trim first to make it easier to paint your walls.
- Semi-gloss also repels humidity, so its great for kitchens and bathrooms (figure B).
- In high-traffic areas, walls should be finished in eggshell because its easy to clean and hides fingerprints.
- For very formal and very contemporary rooms, high gloss is the best choice (figure C).
- With the right paint finishes, youll enjoy years of beautiful walls.

- Flat paint gives furniture a rustic look.
- For best results when using biodegradable cleaners, apply them in small, circular motions.
- The shinier the paint, the better it cleans.
- High-gloss finish magnifies surface imperfections so make sure you thoroughly sand the surface before painting.
- Before painting a room, turn off the power and tape a "DO NOT TURN ON POWER" sign to the switchbox. Then unscrew ceiling fixtures and remove switch plates.
- Wrap ceiling fixtures in plastic to prevent spatters.
