    • Getting professional advice on storing valuables could be a wise investment of your time.

    • Experts say you can start by stamping or engraving an ID number (figure A) on all valuables and videotaping or photographing them (figure B).

    • These pictures along with a list of the cost and current value of each item can go in your bank deposit box.

    • Small items can be hidden inside a hollowed-out book, food container or bedpost (figure C).

    • Larger items and important documents can be stored in a fireproof wall safe (figure D).

    • To install one (figure E), the wall should be free of plumbing and wiring.

    • Once the outline of the safe has been traced on the wall, the wallboard can be removed.

    • Two-inch screws installed from the inside will secure the safe to the studs.

    • Finally, a picture or wall hanging can hide the safe’s location.

    • With a few simple precautions, you can safely enjoy your valuables at home

    • Many police and fire departments rent or lend engravers.

    • Display prized collections inside cabinets with doors and locks.

    • An unused electrical outlet makes a great mini-safe. Make sure the outlet has no live wiring. Then remove the old plug from the box, cap off the wires, place small valuables inside, and screw the cover back on.

    • Use a neon circuit tester to check for electrical wires inside walls.
