You can’t do much about high gas prices — but there are great ways you can save money

    • Clicking the gas cap three times prevents gas in your tank from vaporizing (figure A).

    • Removing all possible weight from the trunk will also increase gas mileage.

    • Window film can reduce temperatures inside your vehicle (figure B). This means less need for air conditioning and better mileage. Check local laws before installing.

    • Inflate tires to the manufacturer’s standard (figure C). Low pressure can decrease gas mileage up to 15 percent.

    • Using the manufacturer’s recommended engine oil improves engine efficiency, especially when using synthetic oil.

    • Every time you change your oil, add fuel injector cleaner to your gas tank to improve fuel delivery (figure D).

    • Finally, turning off your engine for short periods of time, saves gas. Idling for 15 seconds uses more gas than restarting the engine.

Even with high-priced gas, you can still get the most for your money.

    Web Extras

    • Loose gas caps in the US allow 147 million gallons of fuel to vaporize every year.

    • Check local laws before installing car window film. Go to www.gilafilms.com for a state-by-state breakdown of laws.

    • Get the junk out of your trunk: extra weight inside a vehicle wastes fuel.

    • Do not warm up your engine, even on cold mornings: an idling engine wastes gas.

    • In vehicles made before 1996, one minute of idling equals the gas used for an engine startup.

    • If fuel injectors are worn out, replace them. Unplug fuel pump and let the car idle until the engine dies. Remove the upper half of intake manifold then stuff rags into intake ports. Unplug and unbolt all injectors and disconnect fuel lines. Cut injectors off the rail; press new injectors into the rail; put in new o-rings and torque to the manufacturer’s recommendation. Replace all fuel lines and fuel filter. Clean manifold halves; remove rags and replace upper half of intake manifold.
