Faux wainscoting is a great way to add extra color to a wall without spending a fortune. - All you need is interior paint in three colors, primer and molding.
- Use wider molding for the chair rail and narrow molding for the faux panels.
- Start by priming your walls.
- Then marking and taping the line for the chair rail (figure A).
- One color of paint goes on the wall above the line and another goes below (figure B).
- Using a zero-Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), Green Seal Certified paint (figure C) means no lingering odor or harmful gases in your home.
- Finishing nails will attach the chair rail to the wall.
- A pattern cut out of poster board (figure D) is a great tool to help with the design of the faux panels.
- Painting the molding before you hang it saves time.
- Touch up nail holes with paint (figure E).
- Your old room will get a stylish, updated, new look for your wall (figure F).
Web Extras- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are organic solvents in paint and many other substances that are released into the atmosphere as it dries. VOCs emitted by contribute to the formation of indoor air pollution and ground-level ozone. Paints that are Green Seal Certified meet strict environmental standards.
- Zero-VOC formula paint is better for the environment and dries with no lingering odor. So you can paint anytime of the year without opening your windows.
- Chair rail height is normally 32 to 36 inches off the floor. Rectangular faux panels can be made using molding and range from 9-1/8" to 17-7/8" wide, depending on the dimensions of your wall. Prefab pieces are available at home stores.
- Using a paper pattern will help keep your rectangles consistent. Draw the rectangles on poster board and tape them to the wall to check the design.
- Use a miter box and saw to miter the corners of the molding for the rectangles.
- Use finishing nails to attach the molding to the wall.
