Bird watching can be fun for everyone. All you need is a simple, homemade feeder, birdseed, and suet, which is a high-energy bird food made from beef fat, nuts, and seeds. When building your feeder, premium pine is a good wood choice. Do not use treated lumber because of the chemicals. Materials: one - 1" x 10" x 8' premium pine board one - 1" x 3" x 6' premium pine board exterior wood screws exterior urethane brush hardware cloth or wire mesh Cut list: one - 1" x 10" x 16" two - 1" x 3" x 12" two - 1" x 7.75" x 12" one - 1" x 10" x 12" (actual board size is 3/4 x 9-1/4 x 16) one - 1" x 8.5" x 12" (actual board size is 3/4 x 8-1/2 x 16) The feeder is made from the bottom up. - Cut board sizes as instructed above with a miter saw.
- Center 1" x 3" x 12" on the edge of the 1" x 10" x 16". Clamp, drill pilot holes and screw to bottom. Repeat for other side. This forms the side trays for the food (figure A).
- Cut a 45-degree angle on the top of each 1" x 7-3/4" x 12". This forms the pitch of the roof (figure B).
- Center the above pieces between the side pieces. Drill pilot holes and screw to sides.
- Flush the 1" x 8-1/2" x 16" piece of wood to the top edge of the pitched roof. Drill pilot holes and screw to the side.
- Overlap the 1" x 10" x 16" piece of wood on top completing the roof. Drill pilot holes and screw in place.
- Cut hardware cloth 3" x 18". Staple into place. Repeat for the other side.
- Apply a clear coat of exterior urethane. Let dry, then repeat.
- Drill 1/4" hole through the top of each side.
- Thread nylon rope through the holes and knot underneath creating a loop to hang the feeder (figure C).
- Place suet inside hardware cloth (figure D) and seed in tray and youll be ready to see wildlife right in your own backyard.
