    • When securing your home, entry points are good places to start.
    • Windows or sidelights should be 42 inches from door locks (figure A). Windows any closer than that (figure B) should have impact resistant glass.
    • A storm door will give you even more protection against intrusion.
    • Hanging doors with 2 1/2-inch screws will help prevent thieves from ripping out the hinges (figure C).
    • For sliding doors, a pipe or dowel in the slider track (figure D) is a good deterrent.
    • Adding extra locks that flip up for security or flip down flat for opening makes sliding doors even safer.
    • A monitored security system notifies police of a break in and saves you money on homeowner’s insurance.
    • Security-company stickers on large windows (figure E) or hidden doors can also discourage thieves.
    • Securing your home before a break-in not only reduces theft -- it also gives you peace of mind.
