Space can come at a premium when there’s a new addition to the family.

    • You can create a foldaway changing area by cutting out 2 sections of sheet rock between the studs or a non load-bearing wall.

    • A frame mounted to the studs will serve as the base (figure A).

    • It’s easier to apply paint to the frame before you install it.

    • Freshen up the room with a coat of low odor, mildew-resistant paint.

    • Attaching a foldout padded surface (figure B) to the frame using a piano hinge will create a safe place to change diapers while saving space.

    • Adjustable shelves will give you a place to store changing supplies.

    • Building a storage chest that doubles as a window seat (figure C) is a good solution of nursery clutter.

    • Placing a dresser inside a closet with the doors removed will open up some much needed floor space.

    • Finish off the room with some all-natural fabrics to create a safe environment for your newborn.

    Constructing a changing table

    • Measure a changing pad and add two inches to the height and width to determine the dimensions of the hole to cut from the wall. Leave the drywall strip on the center stud as a spacer that will be used later.

    • While a piano hinge is strong enough to hold a baby, install a sturdy chain on each side for added support. The chain will ensure the changing surface does not lower past perpendicular.

    • You may choose to adhere a cork to the bottom of the changing table so it can serve as a bulletin board while folded away.
