It’s easy to turn a plain glass container into a cool cookie jar (figure A). All it takes is some etching cream and a little creativity.

    • For your design, copy a pattern from the room a stencil, a monogram even a phrase.

    • To bring the design to life, start by tracing it onto adhesive shelf paper.

    • It’s a good idea to clean the glass before applying the design, otherwise the etching cream can pick up oils from your fingers, leaving fingerprints.

    • Press the adhesive paper onto the outside of the cookie jar.

    • For smooth and bubble-free design, try a plastic putty knife (figure B). It works great as a burnishing tool.

    • To prevent your design from looking uneven or streaked, apply a liberal amount of etching cream with a foam brush (figure C).

    • Then, rinse the cream off with running water (figure D).

You now have a fun and functional cookie jar that will look great in your kitchen.

    • Follow manufacturers’ safety instructions when using etching cream.

    • You may want to use etching paste for objects where you want a patterns on a clear background or on something flat like a plate or bowl.

    • When using etching creams and liquids, avoid working on a ceramic-tile surface; instead, use a metal or stainless-steel sink.

    • Be sure to wear gloves, safety goggles and a long-sleeved shirt. Always read labels carefully and work in a well-ventilated area.

    • Etching cream should not be used by children.
