    • To clean your car properly, it’s best to start with the right tools: wash mit, quality wheels, tire cleaners, and a professional auto wash with UV protection.

    • Never use dishwashing detergent, as it can strip off wax and damage the car’s finish.

    • The first step is rinsing the car (figure A) to remove loose dirt.

    • You’ll want to wash in section, starting with the top and working down.

    • Try the two bucket method. Rinsing out dirt and grime in one, then applying clean, soapy water to the car.

    • Bug & Tar Remover (figure B) is great for eliminating the remnants of highway driving.

    • After rinsing, prevent spots and streaks by wiping it dry with a chamois.

    • Brake dust can be removed with a brush (figure C) and wheel cleaner.

    • Don’t forget to condition the tires.

    • Washing your car at least once a week will protect the finish and keep it looking new.

    • Dishwashing liquid contains detergents that can strip off wax and damage the clear coat finish on the car. Most car wash shampoos contain surface conditioner, which act as a lubricant, allowing sand and grit to slide off in the water without damaging the surface.

    • Washing your vehicle in the sun will cause water to evaporate too quickly on the hot surface leaving spots and streaks behind. Parking on a slight incline allows water to run off trim and recessed areas. Rinse the car frequently to prevent premature drying.

    • The 2 bucket method helps keep dirt and grit away from the soap water you’re applying to the car. In turn, this reduces the chances of those elements scratching the paint. It also makes the suds last longer, because the shampoo does not have to fight the dirt in the water.

    • To minimize the transfer of dirt, wash from the top down and rinse frequently. Use tools that hold lots of soapy water. This creates lubrication, which is important for keeping dirt and deposits from scratching the surface.

    • Most bath towels are stitched with polyester thread, which can damage a car’s finish. Always use 100% cotton, synthetic drying towels or a natural sheepskin chamois to dry your car.
