A little preventative care can go a long way toward keeping your car running smoothly. - A good place to start is the owners manual for some how-tos under the hood, such as maintaining proper fluid levels.
- Try to check tire pressure every two weeks and to make sure you get the proper reading (figure A), do it only when the tires are cold.
- Dont know the right pressure for yours? Manufacturers usually post it just inside the door frame (figure B).
- While youre there, give your door hinges a lube job with a spray on lubricant. Dont forget to spray the locks to keep them from freezing (figure C).
- A good cleaning wont make your car run better, but it will keep dirt from getting ground into the carpets and seats.
- After cleaning, its a good idea to protect seats and dash with a vinyl or leather conditioner.
- To apply the same principal outside, apply wax on painted surfaces and lubricants on mag wheels and tires to deflect dust and dirt.
As the saying goes, its that ounce of prevention that can help keep your car running smoothly. Web Extras - Change the oil and oil filter regularly. The owners manual will specify how often you should do this, but a good rule of thumb is to change them every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.
- Check all fluids including brake, power steering, transmission, transaxle, windshield washer and antifreeze fluids. Your owners manual will tell you how to check these.
- Check the air pressure level in your tires at least once a month. Your owners manual should specify the ideal air pressure for your particular tire.
- Check to make sure all your lights work.
- Replace your windshield wiper blades periodically. If they begin to streak, its time to replace them.
- Inspect the engine belts for cracks.
- Check the air filter. It should be clean, not clogged or damaged.
