If you think you've seen all that laminate countertops have to offer, it may be time to look again.

    • This easy care surface can turn heads at a fraction of the cost of granite or solid surface.

    • Laminate is made of thin layers of plastic, bonded to a core of particleboard or craft paper.

    • Today's laminates come in a multitude of textures, colors and patterns that can coordinate with any cabinets, design palettes and light conditions (figure A).

    • Enhanced wear-resistant laminates are less likely to scratch even on darker patterns and glossy surfaces.

    • Laminate options not only look great, they are easy to care for (figure B). The nonporous surface of laminate won't trap bacteria like other surfaces. Clean up is as simple as a damp cloth and mild soap.

With proper care, your laminate countertops should stand up to a lifetime of use (figure C).

    Web Extras:

    • You can purchase laminate countertops readymade with pre-molded backsplash and molded edges, or fabricated onsite to do it yourself.

    • A good fabricator can make laminate seams almost disappear. This isn't the case with stone or tile countertops.

    • To avoid dulling or scratching laminate, never use abrasive cleaners or metal pads. For a stain, gently rub it with a paste of baking soda and water.
