You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a great looking entertainment center. Be resourceful and adapt an old armoire to store all of your media equipment. - Doors with hinges on the outside work well, but if you prefer cleaner lines, pocket doors are a great option (figure A).
- Start by drilling a hole in the back panel, this will make running cables easier and provide ventilation.
- If you have a lot of components, or need additional storage, you can reinforce the existing shelves, or install new ones (figure B).
- A pullout swivel shelf makes viewing easier. You can create space for adjustable shelving for your different sized components by removing the armoire's drawers and horizontal supports.
With a little sand and stain, you have a great entertainment center you created yourself (figure C)! Web Extras: - If the armoire has inside hinges, they can be replaced with hinges that allow for pocket doors. However, since the doors will then slide into the cabinet, it will not be possible to create shelves that extend the entire length side to side in this upper area.
- It will be easier to sand and stain your additional shelving prior to installation.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the proper installation of the pullout swivel shelf to avoid damage and injury.
- Be sure to check the length of the screws you are using to secure the adjustable shelf strips to avoid poking through the outer panels of the armoire.
