- Food freezes faster if it's cooled before being stored (figure A).
- Durable, leak proof containers keep your freezer neat and will help prevent messes (figure B).
- Since food expands as it freezes, it's smart to leave extra space when filling containers, to prevent the seal from breaking.
- Keeping freezer bags flat allows for better freezing and easier stacking (figure C).
- If you label each item with a description and a date before you place it in the freezer, you won't need to play "guess that food" down the road.
- A freezer setting of zero degrees or lower is safest. Watch those use-by dates. Putting older items toward the front can help prevent waste.
- By storing foods with the label facing outward, you'll be saved from a hand numbing food search later. When you come across outdated food, just get rid of it.
- Since freezers are more efficient when they're full, small bags of ice make great space-fillers (figure D).
