Finishing a basement is a great way to create additional living space. - Before starting a below-grade project, address any moisture problems.
- Check that foundation walls are free of cracks and properly sealed prior to construction (figure A).
- Select appropriate building products. Use pressure-treated lumber where wall framing contacts the floor (figure B).
- Consider paperless-drywall. Paper is a food source for mold and is used in traditional drywall. By going paperless, you decrease the potential for mold growth (figure C).
- Finally, select flooring that's approved for below-grade applications and choose insulation with the proper R-value for your climate.
With a little planning and the proper products, your finished basement will provide a comfortable environment the whole family will enjoy (figure D). Web Extra: - Paper facings can support mold growth. Materials without these organic components resist mold.
- There is no way to totally eliminate all mold growth in your home's interior, but you can help control mold by controlling moisture.
- Reduce indoor humidity to 30-60% by venting dryers, bathrooms and other moisture generating sources. These will help decrease mold growth. For more information, visit www.stopfeedingmold.com.
