It's easy to forget important details before a trip. Here are a few reminders.

    • Sign up for an online travel service that automatically sends updated travel information (figure A), including flight departure and arrival delays, alerting your PDA, a friend's cell phone and even a coworker's E-mail.

    • Inform your credit card company of any multi-city itineraries so they don't get suspicious of unusual activity.

    • For an extended trip, consider suspending your mail service or even forwarding it to another address.

    • Prepare your home. Adjust the thermostat (figure B), set timers for lamps and shut off water valves to your washer and dishwasher. Also, insert self-watering spikes for indoor plants (figure C).

    • It's smart to leave a house key and a copy of your itinerary and contact information with a friend or family member (figure D).

These steps will ensure peace of mind as you head out the door.

    Web Extra:

    • Consider getting travel insurance to cover non-refundable payments or deposits.

    • Travel light by shipping bulky gear or gifts ahead by mail.

    • Keep credit card company numbers with you in case of theft.

    • Prepare your home by adjusting the refrigerator temperature, discarding perishables, emptying trash cans, turning off water and gas, leaving your blinds and shades partially open and leaving a car in the driveway.
