Container gardening offers endless opportunities to spread beauty in and around your home.

    • Begin by drawing up a plan of where you'd like to place containers and note the sun exposure for each area.

    • Select interesting containers with a mix of sizes, shapes and materials and check that each container has a drain hole (figure A).

    • Line the bottom of each container with pebbles or gravel to improve drainage and air circulation.

    • Add commercially prepared potting soil, which is sterilized to reduce the spread of disease.

    • Virtually anything can be planted in containers, but annuals work best (figure B). Their shallow roots adapt well to crowded pots, are easily replaceable when they fade and are relatively inexpensive.

    • You'll love the way your plants add a splash of color around your home. Since containers are easily rearranged, it's like having a mobile garden (figure C).

    Web Extra:

    • Terra cotta containers will dry out more quickly than ceramic, wood or metal containers; so water the plants more frequently.

    • All potting soil should be thoroughly moistened prior to filling your containers.

    • Add water-saving polymer crystals to the mix before planting. They absorb water and then slowly release it during dry periods.

    • Thoroughly clean out containers before reusing them. This will prevent the spread of disease.
