When selecting countertops, consider how you use your kitchen and the pros and cons of each option. - Engineered stone is made of quartz particles. It can be expensive, but it is nonporous and resists scratches.
- Granite looks beautiful and holds up to heat (figure A), but it absorbs stains and can crack.
Note: Granite requires periodic sealing. - Colorful solid surfaces are vulnerable to hot pans, but scratches can be sanded out (figure B).
- Concrete, which must be sealed regularly, works well for unusually shaped counters.
Note: Concrete can be cast right in your kitchen. - If a seamless, contemporary look is your style, try heat-resistant stainless steel.
Note: Stainless is subject to denting and scratching. - Laminates, available in a range of colors, are a popular choice. They're durable, easy to maintain and inexpensive.
- Ceramic tile is another economical choice, but be sure to use a stain-resistant grout (figure C).
- Wood surfaces are a popular choice and can be maintained with wood oil.
The right surface can make a big impact on your kitchen's overall appearance and performance.
