There are a few things to keep in mind when looking for replacements whether you're remodeling your kitchen or simply replacing worn-out appliances.

    • Consider the size and needs of your family, and then zero in on any special must-have features.

    • Since some appliances come loaded with bells and whistles, it's important to determine your needs so you're not paying for features you won't use.

    • And size does matter! Know the dimensions of your existing appliances as well as the spaces where the new ones will go (figure A) -- and keep the size of doorway openings in mind.

    • When you start shopping price is probably the most import factor, but don't forget to add tax, delivery and installation charges. And be sure to ask if there are any special financing offers available.

Tip: Be sure to ask if there are any manufacturer's rebate offers as well.

    • Brand reputation can be a good indicator of service and performance. And also ask if the manufacturer's warranty for the appliance includes both parts and service.

    • Also consider the retailer's reputation. Do they have a track record for providing good customer service? Do they have a knowledgeable sales force and a large inventory?

    • When it comes to style, appliances come in a variety of colors and finishes (figure B). Some offer custom panels that can be switched out to match your existing cabinets or kitchen decor.

    • Also consider how easy it is to keep the surfaces clean. Some surfaces are especially good at hiding fingerprints.

    • Take time to ask questions, such as will the old appliances be removed when the new ones arrive? Doing a little homework beforehand will make buying new appliances more enjoyable and ensure your purchases are the right ones for you.
