Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity has been helping families realize the dream of home ownership. Sponsors and volunteers have built more than 150,000 homes worldwide, providing more than 750,000 individuals with safe, decent, affordable shelter. As a Habitat homeowner, applicants must: - Live in substandard or overcrowded housing.
- Be working in a steady job.
- Put in at least 250 hours of sweat equity on their home or another Habitat home.
None of this would be possible, though, without the people (figure A) whose efforts make Habitat a success. Habitat sponsors can be individuals, organizations or corporations, and some companies contribute to Habitat by providing materials, manpower and funding. Individuals also can get involved by donating to Habitat locally or online or by volunteering their time and expertise. Beyond the satisfaction of helping people help themselves, volunteers make new friends, learn valuable skills and watch a deserving family take possession of their first home (figure B). There are many ways to contribute: - You may be an experienced craftsman who enjoys teaching people.
- You may be a novice wanting to learn a new skill such as roofing or dry walling.
- Young or old, your help is needed -- either to build a Habitat home or to support those who do.
