Proper air flow is critical to maintaining good engine performance so keep this in mind when selecting your next air filter.

    • High-performance, re-usable filters deliver more air flow resulting in better performance -- and since they're washable, they can last up to 250,000 miles.

    • Also remember that certain driving conditions may necessitate more frequent inspection and service may be required.

    • Most re-usable air filters should be inspected every six to 12 months:

      1. Begin by raising the hood and locating the air filter compartment.

      2. Remove the clamps holding down the housing and set them aside.

      3. Pull out and inspect the filter (figure A). If there's a visible layer of dust build-up, it needs to be cleaned.

      4. Tap it against a flat surface to remove any loose debris.

      5. Now spray both sides with air-filter cleaner and soak for at least 10 minutes.

      6. Rinse with tap water and air dry.

      7. Before reinstalling the filter, apply a small amount of oil to each pleat and let it soak in for 20 minutes.

      8. While you're waiting use the shop vacuum to clean any debris from the filter compartment. And make sure the hoses (figure B) are in good working condition.

      9. Reinstall the filter making sure it fits properly in place.

      10. Replace the housing and tighten the clamps.

      11. Close the hood.

    • Start up your car to make sure everything sounds and feels right. Now you're ready to hit the road!

Maintaining your re-usable air filter is one of the simplest and least expensive things you can do to keep your car performing in peak condition.
