Your windshield wipers are one of the most important safety features on your vehicle so it's vital to keep them in good working condition.

If you're like most people, you forget all about your wipers until it starts raining -- and you really need them. For this reason, a regular maintenance and replacement schedule is critical.

Most experts suggest installing new windshield wiper blades every six months:

    • The first step is to purchase the correct blades for your vehicle. Your auto-supply store can help you make the right choice (figure A).

    • Remove the old blades by pressing down on the locking clip and sliding the unit off the wiper arm (figure B).

    • With the new blade facing out, slide the arm through the chassis. Then slide it back over the top of the plastic connector, and push until the new unit clicks in place.

    • If your vehicle has a rear wiper blade, you should replace it at the same time.

    • Some cars have different types of connectors (figure C), so consult your car manual. Fortunately, the package comes with the hardware options to make virtually any connection.

    • Over time the elements will do a number on your windshield wipers. Inspect them regularly for signs of wear, and replace immediately if needed.

    • Each time you stop for gas, take a moment to clean your windshield, and wipe your blades with a moist towel.

    • When washing your vehicle, use a small amount of Bon-Ami on a sponge to remove road grime and deposits.

Now you're ready to hit the highway knowing that no matter what nature has in store, you can see clearly ahead.
