    • The first step in organizing your garage is usually deciding what to keep and what to get rid of. Once you've sifted through your items, sort them into logical groupings.

    • Often you can create the most space by getting clutter up off the floor. Installing hooks or a simple 1 x 4 with protruding nails can provide a place to hang your gardening tools (figure A), and installing a pegboard will help you to organize those hand tools.

    • Getting some of those larger items stored may be a little trickier. Items such as bikes can really eat into the space that should be reserved for your vehicle. Bicycles can either be hung on brackets from the wall or simply placed on a freestanding bike tree that stretches from floor to ceiling (figure B). In fact, this can accommodate as many as four bikes.

    • If you own canoes or kayaks, they can either be stowed with hangers or racks or hoisted up to the ceiling using a pulley system regardless of which method you use. Be sure to secure the systems into studs to support the weight.

    • You may want to invest in a storage locker (figure C) to keep your paddles, life jackets and the rest of your sporting equipment neatly organized.

By properly stowing all of your tools, sporting equipment and bikes, you'll find what you're looking for much faster and you'll be able to fit your vehicle for a change!
