Materials:

Socket wrench
Terminal cleaner brush
Terminal protection spray
Corrosion-removal spray
Battery washers
Safety glasses
Rubber gloves
Bucket and rag

• Once you've determined your battery needs replacing, consult your owner's manual (figure A) for the proper size and CCA rating. The higher the number, the more cranking amps the battery has for starting your car.

• Once you've made your selection, apply some corrosion-removal spray to the terminals of your old battery and wipe clean.

  Safety Alert: When removing a battery always remove the negative cable first followed by the postive (figure B). If you touch a wrench to the frame while removing the positive cable with the negative attached you can cause an explosion or fire resulting in serious acid or fire burns.

• Loosen the clamp that holds the battery in place and carefully lift the battery out. Since batteries contain corrosive materials, it's a good idea to wear rubber gloves and safety glasses when handling them.

• Inspect the tray that holds the battery and clean any corrosion from it. Then inspect the cables and terminal ends (figure C) and replace as necessary.

• Apply a coat of terminal protection spray to the new battery and secure it in the tray. Fit battery washers over the terminals, re-attach the battery cables and tighten the terminal clamps securely with the socket wrench.

By replacing your battery periodically, you'll have peace of mind that your car will turn over no matter what the weather is -- but always keep jumper cables on hand just in case.
