    Materials:

    Flashlight
    Wiper fluid
    Coolant
    Motor oil
    Funnel
    Wiper blades
    Terminal cleaner brush
    Safety glasses
    Rubber gloves
    Tire-pressure gauge
    Corrosion-removal spray
    Rag

Before you and the family hit the highway for your next trip, take the time to inspect the vehicle.

    • With a tire-pressure gauge (figure A), check that the tires have the proper air pressure and look for any signs of uneven wear or cupping of the tread, which could mean that the wheels need realignment.

    • Check that the spare tire and jack are in good condition, and replace worn windshield wiper blades every six months.

    • Move under the hood and check that the motor oil is at the proper level, and if it's been more than three months or 3,000 miles since the last oil change, perform one before hitting the road.

    • If there's corrosion on the battery, spray it with corrosion-removal spray and wipe clean. Then clean the posts and terminals and retighten the connections (figure B). If the battery caps are removable, check the fluid level. Then, with a flashlight, inspect the hoses, belts and clamps.

    • Check the coolant reservoir and add a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water until it's at the proper level.

    • Finally, top off the windshield wiper fluid (figure C).

Take the time to properly inspect and prepare your vehicle for that next road trip, and you'll reduce your odds of breaking down on the side of the road.
