Utility knife - Begin by removing any loose existing paint (figure A) from the floor with a scraper and sandpaper. Then test that any remaining paint is adhering well.
- With a utility knife, cut an "X" through the coating down to the concrete. Apply duct tape to the area and pull the tape up in a single, quick motion. If more than 25 percent of the paint comes up with the tape, the paint will need to be removed completely.
- Remove any grease or oil spots on the garage floor with a degreaser (figure B). Scrub and rinse thoroughly. Mix the concentrated cleaner included in the kit as instructed, and scrub the surface clean. Work in sections and rinse thoroughly as you go.
- Once the floor has been cleaned completely, rinse the entire floor and remove any standing water with a squeegee.
- Allow the floor to dry completely and mix the concrete coating according to the manufacturer's instructions. Allow the mixture to stand for the recommended time period, and begin coating the floor using a 1/2" nap roller.
- Work in small sections (figure C) and maintain a wet edge to avoid overlap marks. Sprinkle the decorative chips onto each section as you go.
- Allow your newly coated floor to dry for 24 to 48 hours before walking or placing items on it.
A fresh coat on the floor will make your garage look so good that it may even inspire you to keep it organized!
