    Materials:

    Needle-nose pliers
    Putty knife
    Glazing compound
    Caulking gun
    Glazing points
    Sandpaper
    Spray sealer
    Paintbrush
    Paint
    Replacement glass

Safety Alert: For your protection, always wear work gloves when working with glass.

    • Begin by removing all the old shards of broken glass. Use needle-nose pliers to get the smaller pieces.

    • Once the glass has been removed, take the putty knife and carefully scrape the old glazing (figure A) from around the window. If necessary, use a heat gun to soften it first. Remove any glazing points remaining from the old glass with the pliers (figure B).

    • Sand the edges of leftover putty and paint, and coat the newly exposed wood with a sealer. After that dries, place a thin ribbon of glazing compound in the groove around the outside of the window.

    • Take a piece of glass cut 1/8" smaller in both height and width than the opening, and put it in place.

    • Using the putty knife, press in glazing points every 6" or so around the glass. Place at least two near each corner. Be careful not to press too hard or the glass could break.

    • Roll out a long, pencil-sized tube of glazing compound and force it onto the gap with the tip of the putty knife (figure C). Use a finger or wet cloth to smooth it, and clean any excess from the glass.

    • Once everything is dry, prime and paint the window, overlapping the glass slightly to create a good seal.

Your new windowpane should be air tight and as good as new ... for a while at least!
