Tips for Maintaining Trucks and Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV)

    • If you own a truck or SUV, it's probably used for more than just routine driving. Most of these vehicles work harder than many cars on the road so proper care and maintenance are extremely important. Exposure to dirt and dust can clog the air filter (figure A) and break down the oil. The result is an engine that runs at less than peak efficiency. Hauling heavy loads or towing a trailer can also add to the strain.

    • The best form of protection is to change your oil every three months or 3,000 miles. Consider using a synthetic blend specifically formulated for the engines found in 4 by 4's, SUVs and trucks. These contain anti-wear additives and friction modifiers that help protect hard-working engines.

    • Follow your manufacturer's instructions for changing the oil, check fluids regularly and replace the air filter when needed.

    • Another potential problem area is belts and hoses. Summer heat and stop-and-go traffic can cause fine cracks in the rubber and result in leaks or failures. With the engine cool, perform the squeeze test with your fingers and thumb. If the ends feel soft and mushy, it's time to replace them.

    • Severe weather conditions can corrode battery terminals so remove connecting nuts (figure B) and wires, and clean them with a wire brush or battery tool.

    • Keep the radiator filled and free of debris.

    • Make sure tires are inflated properly and rotated every 5,000 to 7,000 miles. Do the penny test to check the tread. If Lincoln's entire head is visible (figure C), you need new tires.
