    Materials:

    Floor sander
    Edge sander
    Orbital sander
    Hand scraper
    Paint pad
    Hammer
    Nail set
    Dust mask
    Sandpaper
    Chisel
    Pull bar
    Pliers
    Wide masking tape
    Polyurethane varnish

    1. Start by removing shoe molding (figure A) and any other obstructions from the floor area.

    2. Use wide masking tape to protect the baseboards.

    3. Locate any protruding nails and countersink to about 1/4" below the floor surface.

    4. Prepare the drum sander by installing heavy-grit sandpaper.

    5. Position the drum sander in the center of the room, raise the sanding drum, turn the machine on and slowly lower the drum onto the floor as you move forward.

    6. For strip-wood floors with heavy damage, the first pass should be diagonal across the grain (figure B), and the second pass along the grain (figure C).

    7. Keep the sander moving constantly, stopping above 1" from the wall. Repeat this method as you proceed, overlapping each path by 1/4" as you go.

    8. Use an edge sander around the borders, and a hand scrapper to get to hard-to-reach areas.

    9. After sanding, vacuum the entire area with a heavy-duty shop vacuum, and you are ready to seal the floor.

    10. Use a combination of water-based polyurethane and water, and mix thoroughly.

    11. Apply the polyurethane with a painting pad, and allow this to dry.

    12. Apply the first full strength polyurethane coat, brushing with the grain (figure D). Continue until you cover the entire area.

    13. Allow to dry and repeat this process for all additional coats.

Your newly refinished hardwood floor is now complete.
