    Materials:

    Ladder
    Spackling compound
    Putty knife
    Drop cloths
    Bucket and rags
    Various painting tapes
    Sandpaper and a sanding block
    Screwdriver

    1. Begin by removing any switch plates, outlet covers or picture hooks that may get in the way while painting and set them aside.

    2. Fill any holes or imperfections (figure A) in the walls with spackling compound. Allow the areas to dry thoroughly and then sand the areas with fine-grit sandpaper on a sanding block until smooth.

    3. Fill a bucket with warm soapy water and wipe down all the walls until they are free of any dust or grime that would prevent the paint from properly bonding with the surface. Clean the walls from the top down, changing the water frequently. Rinse with clear water to remove any soapy residue.

    4. Using painter's tape (figure B), tape off any trim areas you don't want to paint. To speed the job, try using specially precut 90-degree angle tape for masking off door and window frames.

    5. If you're planning to trim the windows, use a tape (figure C) that provides a UV barrier to prevent the tape from baking onto the glass when heated by the sunlight.

Note: By taping off the glass prior to painting you'll save hours of scraping when the job is done.

Taking these steps to properly prepare a room for painting will ensure that you'll get great results and in a fraction of the time.
