Materials: Sewing machine (with an extension table) Measuring and cutting tools Cutting mat Edge ruler Marking pens Quilting thread Fabric - Create a template for the pieced heart design. Place it on your fabric and cut around it, leaving a 1/4" for turning (figure A).
- Add a little starch around the edges, and fold them over and iron.
- Before removing the template, mark the location of your line.
- Repeat the process until you have two hearts from eight different pieces of fabric.
- Cut 16 background pieces 7-1/4" square from two different fabrics, and iron on the diagonals.
- Match your hearts to the background squares, then center each heart on the square (figure B), matching points and marks to the diagonals.
- Stitch the hearts to the squares, then cut the squares diagonally (figure C) in both directions. Rearrange the triangles, alternating fabrics, and then stitch the pieces together.
- Position the blocks as desired into five rows of three.
- Stitch 2" wide sashing strips between the blocks to form rows (figure D). Use additional strips with connecting squares to join the rows.
- Measure the quilt and then attach border strips of each length (figure E). Layer backing, batting and quilt top, and then baste.
- To quilt, stitch in the seam lines of sashing and borders.
- Finally, use 2-1/2" wide seam binding to finish the edges.
When you're done you'll have a quilt beautiful enough to touch anyone's heart.
