    Materials:

    Prehung door
    Level
    Flatbar
    Wood shims
    Adhesive caulk and gun
    Nail set
    Hammer
    Finishing nails

    1. Begin by removing the existing exterior door and frame to expose the rough opening.

    2. Apply a generous amount of waterproof adhesive caulk to the wood flooring base about an inch inside the front and rear edges (figure A).

    3. Tilt the door toward you, place it in the opening and lock the door into position.

    4. Insert the wood shims under the threshold (figure B) until the door is level.

    5. From the inside, insert shims at the hinge and locks and check to make sure the door is plumb.

    6. From the outside, drive nails partially through the jamb and into the rough frame (figure C) at the shim locations.

    7. Check that the door opens and closes freely, then drive the nails all the way below the surface of the wood using a nail set.

    8. Strengthen the installation by driving a 3" screw into each of the door hinge openings (figure D).

    9. Finally, cut the shims, trim the frame with molding and install the lock as instructed by the manufacturer.
