From "DIY Pottery" episode DPOT-102 |

Host Bill van Gilder offers tips for using a kiln safely.
- The kiln surface is extremely hot during its heating and cooling cycles. Protect from children, pets and combustibles.
- Do not leave the kiln unattended while firing, or at least be sure to be near the kiln in the later stages of firing. Keep a fire extinguisher dedicated to the kiln area.
- Kiln must be located at least 12" (preferably 18") from any wall. Check temperatures around the kiln when it is at high fire. The floor under the kiln must be non-combustible.
- Turn kiln off while loading or servicing. Anyone who services a kiln should know basic electrical safety.
- Vent the kiln and the room. Fumes from a kiln can be harmful.
- Read your kiln instructions thoroughly particularly the caution instructions.
