Pin top two layers of fabric together. These two layers will be sewn as one fabric around armhole and neckline. - Sew loops and tearaway to top layer fabrics (figure A).
- Straight stitch lining to outside fabric and finish neckline and armholes. Keep in mind that the right side of different fabric layers will be showing when the garment is finished in the correct position.
- Sew a "raised" stitch (also called an inside stitch, or understitching) in the seam allowance of the lining, on the inside of the neckline and the armhole (figure B).
- Turn garment to the right side and press each section of armhole and neckline.
- Stitch front shoulder and back shoulder together 1/4" right sides together to start the French seam.
- Trim excess raw edge off.
- Press to one side.
- Flip shoulder to inside dress and do final stitch to complete the French seam.
- Press seam to one side, and tack seam down with a needle and thread.
- Sew side seams layers separately with a French seam finish and catch the merrow hemstitch into the side seam to catch the ends.
