Turning the letters in different ways not only adds visual interest to titles, but is a great alternative for those who have trouble working in a straight line.

As a variation, adhesive letters are adhered to small squares that have been cut with deckle-edge scissors.

Try using a combination of colorful squares and letters for titles with new pizazz. Designer Ruth Gilbert demonstrates.

    Materials:

Small patterned or solid paper squares
    Tweezers
    Craft knife
    Letter outlines or adhesive letters
    Black waterproof archival pen
    White vellum
    Acid-free adhesive

    1. First, use pre-printed letters or print large letters from the computer.

    2. Place white vellum over the letter and use black archival pen to trace.

    3. Use craft knife to cut open areas from letters (figure A) -- instead of just cutting the center section away, consider using a font or selecting a letter with thick, open lines that can be cut away.

    4. Use adhesive to attach letters to patterned or brightly colored squares (figure B) so that color shows through open areas of letter. Tip: Tweezers can be used to easily place and maneuver letters.

    5. To vary the effect, use deckle-edged scissors to trim the edges of the base square, then cut a smaller square to layer over the base. Use tweezers to add an adhesive letter.

    6. Add letters to page to create title (figure C).
