This tissue box was dyed using a technique similar to that used for tie-dyed clothing.

    Figure A

Debbie Stapley uses rubber bands and dye to create a tie-dyed wooden tissue box.

    Materials Unfinished wooden box
    Fine sandpaper
    6-12 large, strong rubber bands
2 or more boxes of dye
    Small brushes or sponge brushes
    2-cup jars with lids
    Craft knife

    1. Sand the box until smooth and wipe clean.

    2. Tie rubber bands around box to create desired pattern.

    3. Mix dye according to manufacturer's instructions. Put lid on jar and shake until dye is fully dissolved.

    4. Dip brush into dye, remove excess, and paint areas (figure A) not covered by rubber bands. (To create a more defined pattern, score along edges of rubber band with craft knife before dye application.)

    5. Allow dye to dry thoroughly before removing rubber bands.
